WEALTH Same Job. Same Fire. Different Financial Reality
The national median firefighter salary is $59,530. The 10th percentile is under $34,490. The 90th percentile is over $101,330. Add overtime on the West Coast and top earners clear $300K plus. That is a 5x gap for the same hose. The same smoke. The same cancer odds at 55.
But here is the number nobody talks about.
San Jose firefighter. $120K base. Median home $1.45 million. Mortgage $88K per year. What is left after housing ... $32K.
Oklahoma City firefighter. $55K base. Median home $200K. Mortgage $12K per year. What is left after housing ... $43K.
The guy making less than half keeps $11,000 more every single year. And owns a home.

The paycheck is not the number that matters. The residual is. What you keep after the zip code takes its cut is the real salary.
One more thing most firefighters never factor in. California taxes pension income up to 13.3%. Texas, Florida, and Tennessee have zero state income tax. Illinois, Mississippi, and Pennsylvania exempt pension income entirely. The guy who retires to a no-tax state keeps tens of thousands more every year without changing anything else about his life.
Here is what you do with this. Run your residual number. Take your base pay. Subtract your housing cost. Subtract your state tax rate. What is left is your real salary. If that number does not work then the zip code is the problem not the paycheck. And where you retire matters as much as when you retire. A California pension taxed at 13.3% versus a Texas pension taxed at zero is a decision worth making before your last shift not after.

HEALTH The Truck Gets an Annual Inspection. You Get a Physical if You Are Lucky.
Your department spent $800,000 on the engine you drove today. NFPA 1910 requires it be inspected and pump tested every single year. No exceptions.
NFPA 1580 sets the same standard for you. Medical evaluations. Fitness assessments. Annual wellness checks.
72% of US fire departments do not fund it.
61% do not provide NFPA-compliant medical evaluations for all firefighters.
73% have no behavioral health program at all.
The apparatus has a replacement plan. You depreciate on a schedule nobody is watching.

Now go do a dead hang.
Not because it is fun. Because every 5 kg you lose in grip strength tracks to a 16% higher chance of dying early. It beats blood pressure as a warning sign for how long you are going to live.
Rough targets. Age 30 to 40 ... 2 minutes. Age 50 ... 90 seconds. Age 60 ... 60 seconds.
Heavier guys hang shorter. That is not an excuse. That is extra information.
Here is what you do with this. Find out what your department actually funds. Ask your union rep or your HR department for the written wellness policy. If one does not exist that is your answer. If you are a company officer push for NFPA 1580 compliance in your next contract negotiation. It is a standard that already exists. It just needs someone to demand it. And regardless of what the department funds ... know your hang time. Know your VO2 max. Know your cardiac baseline. Nobody is coming to check on you. You are the only one watching your own schedule.

EXIT The Truck Gets Replaced. You Get a Retirement Party.
The department has a plan for when the apparatus wears out. A budget line. A replacement cycle. A timeline everyone agreed on before it became a problem.
You wear out on a schedule nobody is watching. And the plan for what happens after is yours to figure out alone.
The first year after retirement is statistically one of the most dangerous periods in a firefighter's life. Cardiac risk goes up. Depression goes up. Substance use goes up. Identity collapses overnight when the thing that defined you for 30 years stops at your last shift.
The guys who made it through clean had one thing in common. They built something before they needed it.
Here is what that looks like in practice. The fire service trained you for 30 years. That training is worth something outside the department. Hazmat certification. Instructor credentials. Safety consulting. Construction. Real estate. The skills transfer. The identity does not have to. Pick one thing the job gave you that has value to someone outside the station and start building it now. One night a week. One course. One conversation with someone who already made the transition.
The department funded a replacement plan for the truck. Nobody funded one for you. That is not a complaint. It is a project. The firefighters who figured that out early did not just retire better. The data says they lived longer.
Three questions worth sitting with before your last shift. What do you do when there is no shift. Who are you when nobody knows your rank. What would you build if the job ended tomorrow.
If you have answers ... you are ahead of most. If you do not ... that is where to start.

GOT QUESTIONS? GOOD.
Some of this ... the residual income math, the wellness gap your department is not funding, the retirement plan nobody builds for you ... might have hit different today. That is exactly why this exists.
What does your department actually fund for wellness. And what have you built outside the station that has nothing to do with the job.
